Bo (Wooden Staff)/ Bojutsu

Following is a video of Toma no Kun, sometimes called Toma no Bo. It is the first bo kata of two in our system. From these two bo kobudo kata comes most of our bo staff fighting techniques. The remainder will come from the Motobu Ryu system to comprise a very complete fighting system of bo against bo and other Okinawan weapons.
The bo, or staff, is probably one of the first weapons that mankind used to defend or hunt. It could easily be found, was not to difficult to handle, and could be used for multiple purposes. In Okinawa, the bo probably originated from a farmtool called tenbin. It is a stick held across the shoulders, on which fish or waterbuckets could be hung. It could also have originated from walking sticks monks used to ease hiking and eventually to defend themselves. The techniques executed with the bo were probably developed very early in history and were probably refined after the Heian Era (around 1127 AD).
The six foot (rokku shaku) bo staff is the primary kobudo weapon of the Seidokan Kobudo system. It is the only kobudo kata with two kata dedicated to it and it has defense and counter attack drills to every other weapon in our arsenal. It is the first weapon learned at the level of brown belt based upon the discretion of the instructor.
