Rank Requirements

Ranking in the Seidokan Family of Traditional Okinawan Arts requires a practitioner to train in a legitimate Seidokan Dojo sanctioned by Shian Toma's Hombu Dojo (All Okinawan Seidokan Karate Kobudo Renmei), Okinawa Japan. He or She must complete and be deemed adept in the requirements set forth by the Hombu or Sub-Associations holding the standards of Kata, Kobudo, Toide and Self Defense. The rank requirements are measured by the following testing manual (click on the photo) outlining principle based karate criteria. Dojo Sensei utilize this manual in the dojo and the Regional and Conference testing boards utilize it as well. Following are three tables that identify some, but not all, of the US Seidokan dojo's/Organizations and their requirements per rank. Gambatte!

Kobudo Kata Requirements
Note A: The Bo kata Shian Toma credited for was originally called Kihon Bo. Later it was renamed by his students as Toma no Bo/Kun. A different basic bo kata was created by the Nix Dojo in Okinawa and it has since been named as Kihon Bo.
Note B: The Iaijutsu Kata and waza were passed to Shian Toma through Seikichi Uehara. He did not create these kata. However, depending on the dojo ... they will be referred to by the following names/terms: Iaijutsu Waza, Iaijutsu Kata, Iai Kata, Toma no Katana, or Motobu no Ken.
Note C: The terms for the sword training is from the Motobu Linage. If a dojo indicates, Japanese Swordsmanship in their kobudo it has come from an outside source into that dojo and is a style of swordsmanship from Muso Shinden Ryu, Einshin Ryu (MJER), or Mugai Ryu. If a dojo indicates Motobu Ken, this refers to the swordsmanship derrived from the Motobu Ryu linage but was learned in the Toma Dojo, Yamauchi Dojo, or the Tira Dojo.
