Ichi Ban (Number 1)

Principles: Evasion and Maai
Defense against: Middle level punch
Counter attack:
  • Fade back with a middle block.
  • Reciprocate with a middle punch to his centerline.
  • Close and remove yourself to a safe distance.
Lesson:
  • It is the body's first instinct to retreat from an attack. Use this to lull the attacker to perhaps overextend his body.
  • Gauge your distance just outside his striking range. This will allow your opponent to commit to his attack.
  • Deviate from his attacking weapon, creating a center opening with the middle block.
  • Utilize trunkial twist to emancipate power in your countering reverse punch.  Align your center line onto opponent's centerline.
  • Work the timing to immediately close the gap between your block and the countering punch without sacrificing the stance work and trunkial twist.
  • Defender's centerline alignment is introduced.  It is critical in all further Yakasoku Kumite that centerlines of both parties are observed.
