Ju-Ichi Ban (Number 11)

Principle: Strike a soft target to disrupt.
Defense against: Middle Punch
Counter attack:
  • Initiate the following simutaneously.
    • Enter to the inside with the right foot.
    • Right hand strike to the opponent's throat.
    • Left hand grabs opponents right wrist.
  • Reposition leg to outside and either:
    • Pull to trip.
    • Sweep opponent's right forward leg.
    • Step deeper and perform a hip toss.
  • Carry to ground using the ground as a striking surface against the back of the head.
  • Finish by striking to the diaghram or floating ribs.
  • Cover and retreat to a safe distance.
Lessons:
  •  Number 11 is meant to be explosive with the throat strike. This entering in results in a disruption that should enable you to do anything you wish with your opponent.
    • Shorin Ryu Throat strike positions the hand and thumb in a horizontal cup across the opponents entire throat width.
    • Motobu Throat strike will just utilize the thumb positioned about 3/4 of an inch from the palm and position itself to go between the juggler and the thorax.
  • Your decision point at the leg reposition will determine the severity of outcome, where you want your opponent to make contact with the ground.
  • Some practitioners maintain the throat strike as a throat grab all the way through the throw.  Some will reposition their hand to the opponent's left shoulder.
