Kyu Ban (Number 9)
Principle: Impaling knee (push/pull) from Seisan Kata
Defense against: Middle Punch
Counter attack:
Tai-Sabaki movement forward and left.
Double grab to the oncoming weapon.
Drive the left knee into opponent's floating ribs.
Move left hand to opponent's right shoulder as you draw opponent's arm across your lower abdomon.
Lower yourself into a deep stance applying pressure to the elbow short of breaking.
Release and cover to a safe distance.
Lesson:
Tai-Sabaki is very dynamic in the fact that you are sliding off opponent's center line and launching a knee in conjunction with an arm grab.
Breaking down this technique in steps is necessary for dojo practice; however, it is one movement and much faster at the higher levels where the knee is launched at the same time the grab occurs and the rear leg is a sliding post.
After the knee strike, be aware where you place your left foot in stance. The deeper across the opponent's centerline you accomplish this and maintain balance and cut his ... the easier the body can be applied to the elbow/arm bar with positive results.
The defense option we utilize in Kyu Ban varies from Seisan Kata. In the kata we reverse the motion and throw our opponent backwards. Here we continue the forward motion and redirect it outside his sphere of control to take him slightly forward from his original path of travel.
